ABOUT SOUTH BEACH DIET
In 1999 doctor Arthur Agatston, cardiologist from Florida, worked out nutrition complex which he further called “South Beach Diet”. This diet gained large popularity among people; by the way, Hillary Clinton has chosen it for her and her husband Bill Clinton. As we may notice, there are lots of figured pretty girls and athletic trainers in Hollywood movies about Miami Beach., but in real life a big part of sunny coast natives are suffering from adiposity.
Doctor Agatston proposed this diet for heart disease patients, which helps to loose excess weight and thus decreases heart burden. After trial period it was noticed that the general conditions of patients got better and they really loose weight.
MAIN SOUTH BEACH DIET PRINCIPLES
This is a very well balanced nutrition of useful carbohydrates and fats without counting calories. Ration recommended – 3 times per day eating plus 2 “bites” during the day. It’s very important to eat eggs, sea food, vegetables, nuts, fatless meat, olive oil and drink lots of water. At the same time you have to limit animal fats, margarine and “bad” carbohydrates (sugar, fruits, rice, potato and white bread). Excluded – beer, chips, salt peanuts. Diet consists of 3 phases, each phase has different assortment of products for meal. Let’s discuss the main requirements of each of them:
SOUTH BEACH. RECIPE
South Beach. First phase.
South Beach diet phase 1 duration – 2 weeks. Main aim – to get rid of “bad” carbohydrates. Result – possibility to lose 5-6 kilograms.
During 2 weeks it’s prohibited to eat fruits, bread, rice, potato, macaroni, sugar, alcohol and pastry. You used to eat sandwiches after tea? Forget about it for two weeks. It’s allowed to eat fatless meat, chicken, sea food, fish, eggs, cheese, vegetables, salad and nuts. Eat as much as you want but do not overeat, it’s enough just to assuage your appetite.
Products allowed in first phase: beef (fillet, undercut, boiled); veal (chops, fillet, undercut, boiled); pork (boiled, undercut, boiled ham); birds without skin, turkey fillet (2 pieces per day), chicken and turkey brisket; sea food; fatless meat, dietary sausages; fatless cheese (Cheddar, brynza, Parmesan, cottage cheese); nuts (peanut oil – 1 spoon per day, peanuts, pistachios, walnuts); eggs (hard-boiled eggs without limitation – if health allows); vegetables (artichokes, asparagus, haricot and beans, broccoli and cauliflower, cabbage, cucumbers, marrows, egg-plants, tomatoes (no more that one per day), celery, salad, mushrooms, spinach, turnip, pepper); fats (sunflower and olive oils); spices (all spices without sugar); extracts (vanilla, almond).
Preliminary 1st phase menu: breakfast – a glass of tomato juice, several soft-boiled eggs with greens and mushrooms, two pieces of beckon, decaf with fatless milk without sugar or herbal tea; morning “bite” – some cheese; dinner – vegetable salad with two sauce spoons for salad; daily “bite” – fatless cheese with tomatoes and cucumber; supper – boiled pike perch fillet, baked vegetables, vegetable salad with two sauce spoons for salad; dessert – lemon muss.
South Beach diet. Second phase.
Phase 2 Duration – until you gain desired weight. Main aim – to understand if you could live without some kinds of food for two weeks, it’s not so critical necessary for your organism. Result – desired weight. Here you may eat everything what was prohibited in the first phase, but not to go mad with eating potatoes, macaroni or bread.
Products allowed (in addition to first phase products): fruits (apples, apricots (fresh and dry); bilberries, melon, cherry, grapes, kiwi, mango, oranges, pears, peaches, plumps, strawberries, grapefruits); milk products (milk – non-fat or fatless, soy-based milk (fatless), yogurt – natural or fruit, non-fat or fatless); carbohydrates (bread, porridge, rice, macaroni, and popcorn); vegetables (potato, green peas); bitter chocolate, non-fat pudding, red vine.
Preliminary 2nd phase menu: breakfast – fresh strawberries, oatmeal porridge on fatless milk with a spoon of milled walnut, decaf with fatless milk without sugar or herbal tea; morning “bite” – a soft-boiled egg; dinner – chicken salad with vegetables; daily “bite” – fresh pear and light cheese; supper – salmon with spinach and vegetables, vegetable salad with olive oil or vinegar; dessert – strawberry with chocolate.
South Beach Diet. Third phase.
Duration – as much as you want. Main aim – not to gain lost weight again. Result – way of life without strict restrictions but reasonable limitations (“bad” carbohydrates as potato, macaroni, rice, pastry, sweets. Choose “good” fats, do not overeat, and drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. Also you should take additional calcium dose each day. If you loose your temper and feel necessity to loose weight – just simply return to the first phase.
Preliminary 3rd phase menu: breakfast – half of grapefruit, omelet with Mexican sauce, a piece of bread, decaf with fatless milk without sugar or herbal tea; dinner – beef backed in flour, fresh apple; supper – grilled chicken, boiled asparagus, couscous, vegetable salad with olive oil or vinegar; dessert – strawberries with vanilla yogurt.
CAUTIONS OF SOUTH BEACH DIET
The main plus of this diet is that it is well-balanced (all groups of products are used here). Restriction of sweets and pastry helps to regulate cholesterol and insulin content in blood. However some doctors refer to the fact that main weight loss happened as organism looses liquid while such nutrition. Also this diet is restricted to people with compromised kidney function. Although this diet is very light, at the second phase when prohibited products are allowed, some people can loose the temper and start overeating. But researches showed that only 5% don’t bear the difficulties and don’t complete the diet. Anyway you should try it and you will be nicely surprised with the results.
